After years of study and teaching, I developed a class that uniquely incorporates elements from both yoga and movement.

Beginning Tuesday, October 11, 2022, I will begin to teach, ‘Essential Stretch,’ my unique fusion of movement and beginner yoga. The course affords me an opportunity to work with my clients in a small group setting where I ensure they stretch and move correctly.

Years ago, I started ‘Essential Stretch’ at the gym where I worked.  Why name the class ‘Essential Stretch?’ I wanted to use a naming convention that would attract those who disliked yoga but wanted to stretch.  Little did those who disliked yoga know I taught them yoga poses. Success! When I left the corporate gym, my clients demanded I continue to teach ‘Essential Stretch.’

Last night’s ‘Essential Stretch’ addressed the needs of those clients present. With the recent onset of daylight savings time and cold weather, my clients feel fatigued.

One of the participants experiences lower back pain. After employing props, yoga bricks, and bolster, I rubbed doTERRAs Deep Blue Athletic Rub on her back all to ensure her comfort. Additionally, to offset her back pain, we did poses with slow moments.

Another class member, a medical doctor, works many hours. Side note, a client for many years, the doctor finds time to fit personal training and yoga sessions into her weekly schedule. She told me her hips were tight, so I incorporated hip openers into class. I gave both clients in attendance peppermint oil to soothe them.

Last night I talked about the changes we recently experienced with the transition to early darkness and frigid weather. I reminded them to make sure the class meets their needs. In other words: if they want to stay in a pose for longer, they should. If they need a moment to rest, then rest. My job is to guide, and support their needs gently.

Honestly, I feel so good about teaching yoga class because I know the class directly impacts my clients’, and friends’ health. How do I know? For one, all of them made tremendous improvements in their flexibility. How else do I know? They come back every week.
